Welcome to our annual Carey Ellis student juried exhibition! While 2020 has brought unique challenges, SA/VS students have been working hard making extraordinary, thoughtful, and inspired art. This year nearly 250 pieces were submitted for consideration by our juror, with the selected work on view below.
Carey Ellis 2020 Juror: Stephanie Santana
Stephanie Santana (b. Los Angeles, CA. 1984) is a textile artist, surface designer and fine art printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY.
Her work explores archival photographs and documents, layering hand printed images and patterns as a way of understanding lineage and the spaces between memory, imagination and the physical evidence of Black life.
She earned a BA in Communication Studies, 2006, and a degree in Textile and Surface Design, 2018; and currently serves as the Communications Director and Founding Member President of Black Women of Print. She believes in the possibility that textiles and print hold: as record-keepers, as protection, as tactile objects of enduring personal and cultural significance.

Carey Ellis Galleries
All work included in the exhibition has been grouped into different "rooms" according to shared subject matter, themes, or formal elements. As is often the case in a physical gallery space, when pieces are installed together on walls or clusters of pedestals, curated groupings help organize a large collection of varying work. Similarly in this virtual space, work has been carefully sorted into "rooms", allowing individual works to exist in dialogue with those in close proximity. You can view each "room" by clicking on the images below.
