Referencing the tradition of oya (narrow lace trimmings used as edging on headdresses of women and household textiles in the Middle East), my work explores non-verbal communication, acculturation, hybrid identity, and women’s work. Layering painting, ornamentation, photography, and textile traditions on domestic fabrics, I create intercultural portraits of Turkish and American families. Playing with the malleability of hybrid identity, I obscure the bodies of old photo transfers with patterns by painting and embroidering eclectic, intercultural symbols like party hats, solo cups, and fezzes that add an element of humor when combined with the carefully posed scenes. Specifically, the bed sheets, crib, mantel, roof, and immigration status are a few of the references I make to the idea of home and domesticity.
