This piece is a book of anonymous poetry. The copy was gathered by asking individuals to submit an original poem, or just a thought that they may have, through a survey. Designed in InDesign and with the use of Illustrator, the book uses expressive typography, photographs, illustration, and a bold color palette to share the words of these anonymous individuals.
The survey link was sent to a wide range of individuals which lead to a variety of poems. Because of this, there is not a specific intended audience. But, this book will naturally appeal to millennial readers and artists. The work serves to inspire readers to share their thoughts, and to find value in what others wish to share. It also aims to impress designers through the specific design choices and risks that were taken throughout the book. This is where the title Free Your Mind comes from. This piece was inspired by the works of Morgan Harper Nichols, an Instagram poet. She creates stunning illustrations with inspirational statements, which she shares on social media and in her book, All Along You Were Blooming. This poetry book aligns with my other work through a colorful yet muted color palette, a simple typeface, and carefully considered layouts on each spread. This work differs from my work through the risks I took, in an attempt to avoid my typical orderly design. This book does have order, but also has risks in breaking boundaries and striving to achieve the unexpected.
Poetry has been a freeing and inspiring outlet for me as an individual, and I hope that Free Your Mind does the same for those who see it. This piece was challenging for me in regards to getting content, as well as in risk taking. Although this piece currently exists in a digital format, I plan on having these books printed and available for purchase online. Overall, I am very proud of this piece and how it pushed me as a designer.
