As college, as well as my experience studying fine art and digital design, comes to a close, I would like to showcase not only my strongest skill sets I have developed within design, but also my favorite forms of traditional art. I originally found my passion for art through self taught forms of analog art such as drawing, painting, and some sculpting. Later in my college career, I developed a strong skill set of layout design and organization, as well as an interest in photography and documenting work processes.
I desired to create a project that entails a deep study of natural connections between color and wildlife. More specifically, I wanted to study a unique way that I could create wildlife paintings, while straying from classic paint, graphite or watercolor. Along with my desire to create analog pieces, I wanted to digitally create a way to not only showcase my final work, but to detail my experience and newfound knowledge of painting with natural dye. I created natural dye for 6 different colors. Each color represents symbols or meanings. The subject, wildlife animals, display behaviors similar to the meaning of the given color.
I used yellow onion skins and lemon juice to create a yellow natural dye that is symbolic for intelligence, creativity and even personal power. Octopuses are intelligent yet humorous creatures, similar to the meanings of yellow. Therefore, I depicted an intelligent and humorous octopus in the natural color yellow. With many variables all connecting back to each other, I designed a project that began with a physical journey of creating my own natural dye while photographing my progress and later transforming my documented work into a well organized and thought-out process book. This project is something that I have personally been very eager to work on, as I am able to enjoy both painting and design simultaneously, while revealing my work process and research findings.
