As I progress through my journey of becoming an artist, I’ve really come to love the under-appreciated genre of fine art photography. In particular, architectural fine art photography has stood out to me due to its beautifully clean aesthetic and simple perfection. Having an opportunity to do whatever I desired for my capstone project, with minimal restriction, I decided to embark down the path of fine art and fundamentally change the way I view my surroundings. I took the fundamentals of fine art photography and began envisioning how I could change the way we often view structures in our environment. Using my camera, I bring into greater focus the intricate details of architecture around us, through abstraction and negative space. My methods involve, shooting in black and white to avoid the distraction of color, highlighting detailed elements of the subject, and most importantly, completely removing unnecessary details to avoid further distraction. My goal is to edit the image in a way that the subject becomes a novel sculpture with prominent highlights and shadows, creating a new standalone element of architecture that rises from the image.
