Marie McClary
The creation process naturally lures me into a state of self-reflection. The feeling I get while I create is an active mediation that provides me with a spiritual experience. In that moment, I dissect my mind, heart, and soul while growing my relationship with God. Through that experience, my art and mind tend to be focused on themes of forgiveness, gratitude, and beauty.
My preferred medium to work with is clay. This natural material is forgiving with the “mistakes” I make. The medium’s forgiveness allows me to release my internal pressure and just breathe. When that internal pressure is gone, the creation process becomes more enjoyable, and I feel the presence of God. I am freed from the chains of Perfecting, and instead welcomed into the arms of Creating. My hope is that viewers are able to feel a similar sense of peace while viewing my sculptures. Through closed eyes, smooth lines, and neutral colors, I want each sculpture to appear as if it is taking a deep, calming breath.
I view “the female” as a natural creation of art with its organic lines and evident form; the way light interacts with the female form leaves me captivated. I chose neutral colors to highlight the way light craves to caress the body. My sculptural pieces not only capture this interaction of light but also the organic form of the female body. The female figure ties my main themes of forgiveness, gratitude, and beauty together, and also aids in my spiritual experience during the creation process. I meditate on my belief of God as the artist of my life, just as I am the artist of the clay figure.
Each of these pieces are created from stoneware clay and are involved in an ongoing project.
