Floriography is the Victorian communication through floral arrangements. Recently, I have been fascinated with floral arranging and floriography after taking a floral design course here at U.K. “Floriography Tarot” combines the language of flowers with the world of tarot cards. The cards in the deck are each paired with a flower that has similar symbolism or meaning. I designed a full deck of cards and a guide book that explains the meaning of each card and the symbolism behind each flower.
What fascinates me about both tarot cards and floriography is that the symbolism can be interpreted differently from person to person. Flowers have symbolism across cultures and meanings can be altered by color or development stage. Tarot cards can be read differently depending on which cards have been pulled in a spread and who’s reading them. In this piece, I attempted to combine these two languages in order to create a more complex reading. This project combines my digital work with my studio practice. The flowers were hand painted using gouache paint, they were then scanned into photoshop, cut out, and reassembled in Illustrator onto the front of the cards. The back of the cards and the guide book were designed digitally.
By combining floriography and tarot, I have added a new layer of depth to card readings. Because the flowers have such varied meaning across both culture and stage, they form a perfect basis for a widely up-to-interpretation tarot card deck. Floriography has been a refreshing new medium for me and I plan to do more work with it in the future.
