Naturae Sapiens
Nature has the ability to induce serenity, incite passion, stimulate our senses, and carry memories that transport us home no matter where we are in the world.
My work is inspired by the psychological influence of the natural world on our emotions and mood and how the constant and grounding nature of our surrounding can store memories and hold different meanings to all of us. Subject matter like flowers, leaves, insects, sea elements and abstracted human figures interacting or as part of nature are the most noticeable in my artworks, enhanced by flowy undulating shapes that produce a calming effect and allow the mind to wander and reflect. The art I create is a vehicle that allows me to relive and immortalize the memories I have of my home, my childhood and reflect about times of mourning, stress and uncertainty.
The materials I gravitate towards are fabrics, metal wire, ink, clay, beads and digital among others to create sculptures and two-dimensional pieces that are usually small in size to represent my intimate and personal connection to the content of the pieces. Fabric is a special medium for me in my art-making because it has strong ties to the history of seamstresses in my family from who I learned how to sew which empowered and nurtured my ability to express myself and enriched my art. The art I create is my personal exploration of the symbiotic relationship between human and natural elements, focused on showing the deep connection between the two and how they shape each other as they evolve.
