In my films, I like to capture the essence of being a human through emotion and everyday struggles on a social and personal level. I am passionate about creating time capsules of the human experience through films that deal with the struggles of everyday people, highlighting drug abuse, alcoholism, relationships, poverty and overall tribulations of Americans today. To do this, I have created a film that deals with real people, pitting real characters against each other and allowing them to interact in the world as the viewer experiences the film voyeuristically. The chosen subject matter was chosen to depict what it means to be a human being, which was working class people struggling to find their happiness and their purpose in life.
I chose a cinema verite style for my piece in order to capture a more deeply personal, intimate portrait of my characters, using minimal production and crew as well as shooting on location and avoiding exterior production qualities in general in an attempt to create a truly immersive experience. In this way, I was able to create a short film that captures real living people in their natural habitats, and in turn formed a living portrait of humanity. The title, The Whale, comes from the song that the main character sings about a man trapped in the belly of the whale, much like how the protagonist feels about his current situation, with his life struggles being the whale.
